Cisco: Building Your Own Home Lab, Part I

CCNAs and CCNA candidates hear all the time: "Get some hands-on experience. From my personal experience climbing the Cisco certification ladder, I can tell you firsthand that there is no learning like hands-on learning. N. simulator in the world is to give you the experience you get, wiring and configuration of your router.

Every time I say this not to mention one of my students, who always say it costs too much. The truth is that now it is cheaper to build yourCCNA and CCNP lab than it has ever been. The secret? Used router.

The word 'used' turns a lot of people do not buy many of us who have used computers or servers. Router Cisco, however, are robust, I personally own a Cisco 4000 router that I, as a frame relay switch in my lab I have had for about four years ago, and I've never had a problem with it.

The good news for CCNA and CCNP candidates is interested in building their own laboratories, using CiscoEquipment has never been so numerous or less. eBay is a great way to get an idea of what's out there and what prices are, but you have to assemble your lab one piece at a time. Many eBay sellers who sell Cisco equipment sell ready-made CCNA and CCNP labs for one price, including cables.

I asked one of the leading suppliers of laboratory CCNA and CCNP, www.ciscokits.com, who build frequently asked questions about home laboratory. Here's what hesay

Why do I need a router instead of a mortgage?

You need a physical router as the simulators have simply not been able to give you hands on "You see what happens when you pull a cable or put a cable in the wrong place. Come to find very quickly that the errors relate to Router 1 to Router 5 all because you are not bolt right into a cable. A simulator capable of simulating, dass

How many routers do I need?

Two routersreally necessary, if it works. If you have a very tight budget, you can receive value from only purchasing a single router over working with a simulator. However, it will not be able to reach the main thing we want to see. The propagation of route tables! The only way you can check if your configurations work, is to have at least two routers. Therefore, I strongly recommend that it comes with a dual router kit with everything you need to acquire.Otherwise, you can try for days and days, all the pieces a bit 'more than you need to find your lab up and running.

I need a ride?

Well, it's nice to have. However, with only about 2 questions on the test, "hands on" knowledge as switches, if you skimp skimp on something at the counter.

Routers and switches What should I buy?

Decisions, decisions, decisions! 2500/2600 router that I take? I will present some pros and cons of each list of router below, alongcurrent prices (note that prices are generally lower if) you buy a dual router kit instead of a router:

1) Cisco 2501 Router with 16 MB of DRAM Flash/16MB $ 94.99. The router cheap introduction, and is able to support most of the commands you need to learn for the CCNA exam. All 2500 routers that we are discussing with a minimum of two serial ports and an Ethernet port to come. Need to convert a transceiver to this unit in the Ethernet AUIOne RJ-45 style Ethernet port.

2) Cisco 2503 Router with 16 MB of DRAM Flash/16MB $ 119.99. This is the same as a Cisco 2501, unless there is an ISDN connection, so that all ISDN commands for the CCNA exam can be completed. You need a transceiver in Ethernet AUI port to an RJ-45 style Ethernet port conversion.

3) Cisco 2505/2507 with 16 MB of DRAM Flash/16MB $ 109.99. The same as a Cisco 2501 except it has a built-in 8 or 16 port hub, so as nothave to purchase a transceiver.

4) Cisco 2514 Router with 16 MB of DRAM Flash/16MB $ 149.99. This router is the same as a Cisco 2501 except instead of an Ethernet port, you have two. One may ask what is the problem? Well, you can use as a modem / router DSL modem. Now you can test your ability to set up a firewall and router in a live on the Internet. Lots of fun! You need two transceivers, Ethernet AUI ports to an RJ-45 conversionStyle Ethernet ports.

5) Cisco 2520 Router with 16 MB of DRAM Flash/16MB $ 119.99. This is the same as a 2503, but also adds two additional ports, so use this as a frame relay switch later in your CCNA studies. Coast as much as a 2503, so you save a lot of money tip.

6) Cisco 2612 Router with 32 DRAM and 8 MB Flash $ 199.99. This is a modular router unlike any of the 2500 Series routers. The big advantage is that you can purchase additional modules to addOther functions such as serial ports, ISDN, Ethernet, WIC, and so on. However, thanks to the flexibility that you pay a bit 'more. One day there is a frame relay switch, the next is your ISDN router. In the long run will be cheaper to buy a number of special routers for each discipline you want to learn.

7) Cisco 1912 or 1924 Switch Enterprise Software $ 109.99. This is a good option at low cost .. The only downside is still there, is a 10 MB switch excepttwo 100 MB uplink ports. Not a big deal, since you have 10 MB routers.

8) Cisco 2912 or 2924 Switch Enterprise Software $ 249.99. This option is all the commands for the current test is needed to manage and move a 100 MB.

And if you like your lab when you sell the certification, you can negotiate a price with the supplier who sells it to you, or you can even sell on eBay. And 'my experience that 95% of candidates who earn theirCCNA going to pursue their CCNP within one year, however, does not sell quickly.

Finally, it spends only a few hundred dollars, and to gain experience and valuable knowledge that will help you in your research, both certification and the supply of jobs. When they got there, I can tell you that you learn a lot more about the proper installation and wiring is owned equipment than you ever heard of a simulation of the real thing.

To your success,
